Russian Visa Requirements

Russian Visa Application Form

There are only 54 countries, including many South American nations and former Soviet states, whose citizens can travel to Russia visa-free, for different periods depending on the nationality and purpose of the stay. All other passport holders need to obtain a Russian visa to visit the country, and the majority of foreign citizens wishing to enjoy a short holiday are able to apply for a Russian tourist visa for stays of up to 30 days. Before applying, eligible citizens will need to meet the Russia visa requirements for documents and personal information.

At the moment, Russian visa requirements for the tourist visa involve the applicant applying for a tourist invitation letterbefore presenting documentation at a Russian Embassy or Consulate. However, from 2021, the eVisa for Russia is estimated to be implemented as an Electronic Travel Authorization through a simple online application,  eliminating the need to apply for a Russia visa in person.

Entry Requirements to Russia

Foreign citizens traveling to Russia should first check if they require a visa for the country, and will then need to determine the type of Russia visa required depending on the duration and purpose of the stay. It is important to check the exemptions for each visa in the case that a different travel document is required.

Eligible citizens wishing to travel to Russia for a short holiday of no more than 30 days are required to obtain a Russia tourist visa before their trip. This is expected to be implemented as an online travel authorization by 2021, saving the time and hassle of applying in person. Citizens of the United States only are able to apply for a tourist visa with validity of up to 3 months.

The Russia visa requirements for tourism currently involve first applying for a tourist invitation online, then attending a Russian Embassy or Consulate in the applicant’s country of residence to present supporting documentation and complete the application process.

Citizens of 18 eligible countries traveling to the extreme Eastern territories of Russia, including some Asian and South American nations, are required to apply for an eVisa for Far East Countries through an online application. This electronic visa is valid for a stay of up to 8 days and can be applied for between 20 up to 4 days prior to the departure date.

Before applying, travelers are required to have already finalized their travel plans, made accommodation bookings and arranged tickets for attractions, festivals, etc.
It is first necessary to get a Russian tourist invitation online, which many tour operators and even hotels can provide. A copy must then be presented at a Russian embassy, alongside the following supporting documentation.

Accommodation Bookings

Making accommodation bookings is one of the most important requirements for visa Russia and the first thing you should do when planning to travel to the country. When supplying supporting documentation at an Embassy or Consulate, it is necessary to provide proof of accommodation for every night of the stay in Russia, whether a hostel or hotel booking or another arrangement. The consular officials will not approve the Russia visa unless they are satisfied you have all the necessary accommodation pre-arranged.

Tourist Invitation

The Russian visa requirements for tourism involve the applicant first requesting a tourist invitation online, either through a Russian travel company or hotel or hostel where they will be staying in Russia. They can then print a copy to present at a Russian Consulate or Embassy.
